So your first try in the Google AdWords game - the answer bar! What is an answer bar? An answer bar is a small box on your web-page which will pop up when someone clicks on your ad. Answer: the answer bar isn't open to reveal the answer choices for every ad click! Why? Because some clicks are accidental and they get you banned! You see, Google doesn't like (and doesn't want) just anybody clicking their ad. And those who do - don't stay long enough in their account to accumulate any points or credits to earn some kind of de-listing from the system. Now, it used to be just a little annoying to have that bar tugging at your heart strings when you were trying to reach a worthwhile answer. But now that they are visible, you can choose which ads you want people to click on. Want me to tell you about the other great benefits of this little box? Well... there is one. This little box could make answering AdWords easier than ever before. Yes! This feature is making AdWords so much simpler than it used to be. Imagine a bar where the only choices are the ones in the top right corner - a very visible warning that somebody is about to click on an ad. You can choose which words you want to appear at the bottom of the bar (called the "searched keywords" bar) and which words you would like to display above the "searched keywords" bar (called the "adverts" bar). But the best part of the new system is that the user is not required to click on every word. If they decide not to click on any of the words (or even most of them), they won't be charged the fee. They just won't be billed at all. Makes your life easier, doesn't it? And if they choose to click on an ad, then they will have to pay for it - no questions asked. No more annoying "click here to avoid being charged" messages. Now let's take a look at how this will play out for you. Say you perform AdWords on a regular basis. That means you will probably have some favourite search engine results showing up when people perform searches on Google. But what if you are the sort of person who does not like to pay for anything? Well if you choose to set the Search Results Only option, you will see a special bar on the side of the search results list which shows you a list of the search results that you have agreed to display in the Google search engine. You will be able to see all the results which were clicked on, as well as those which were not. You can use this "other results" bar to see the results from the other websites which Google does not charge you to show. And that is exactly what this small "bar" does. It tells you whether the ad was a success or a failure. So if you click on the "other results" bar and the ad does not work, you can click on the "cancel" button. This "other results" bar will disappear from the Search Results page and all the other adverts will be restored. So there are two main ways to use this feature. The first is to be able to tell at the start of your session whether or not Google has chosen to display a particular ad. The second way is purely for personal curiosity - to see which websites other users find useful and informative. If nothing else, this can save you time and money spent on advertising if you can identify your own interests and tastes. It is a useful experiment which Google is likely to continue with over the coming months. |
